Residency by Investment: New NZ AIP Visa Rules

residency by investment

If you are looking for a way to obtain New Zealand residency by investment, the latest updates to the Active Investor Plus (AIP) visa will be of particular interest to you. The AIP visa option was introduced in 2022, opening the door to an array of investors and prospective residents from around the world. The latest updates to this visa include two new investor categories to suit the varied needs and resources of different investors. Here is what you need to know.

What Are the New AIP Visa Rules?

The AIP visa category was introduced as a way of attracting substantial foreign investment in New Zealand companies, stocks, bonds and other assets. Migrants who have the appropriate amount of funds to invest are invited to purchase these assets, aiding the country’s economic growth. In return, they are offered an expedited path to residency.

The latest changes to the AIP category involve the reduction of the minimum investment amount and the creation of two separate categories. This refinement helps to simplify the investment process. The two new categories are Growth and Balance. Initially, the minimum investment amount was NZ$15 million, regardless of the types of assets an investor wished to target. This has now been changed to two different, substantially lower investment minimums for the two new categories, each of which covers a different selection of assets.

The Growth category is for people who have a minimum of NZ$5 million to invest, and targets higher-risk investments such as managed funds and direct investments in New Zealand businesses. You would need to be prepared to invest your funds for a minimum period of three years. You would also have to spend a minimum of 21 days in New Zealand during the investment period.

As its name suggests, the Balanced investment category includes mixed investments, allowing for lower risk assets, as well as a combination of high and low risk investments. Potential investments include bonds, listed equities, philanthropy, and property development. To qualify for an AIP visa in this category, you would need to invest a minimum of NZ$10 million and retain the investment for at least five years. You also have to spend a minimum of 105 days in New Zealand over the investment period. However, you can reduce this by investing more than the minimum amount. For example, if you invest NZ$11 million, you will get a 14-day reduction. If you invest NZ$13 million, the period will be reduced by 42 days.

With the introduction of the new categories comes a more diverse spread of possible investment targets, broadening the scope and making investment more attractive for a wider range of investors. Whether you prefer to invest directly in businesses, purchase property, buy stocks and bonds – or a combination of these – you can create an investment portfolio that suits your available resources, your personal interests and your risk appetite.
