What Are the New Zealand English Test Changes?

The main New Zealand English Test changes affect the Accredited Employer Work Visa, also called the AEWV.

From June 1, 2026, New Zealand extended minimum English language requirements to ANZSCO and National Occupation List skill level 3 roles. Skill level 4 and 5 roles already had English requirements.

That means more skilled workers now need to prove they can speak and understand English when applying for an AEWV.

You may meet the rule through the following:

  • A recognised English test, such as IELTS
  • Certain citizenship, study, or work history
  • Evidence accepted by Immigration New Zealand

This is where mistakes happen. Many applicants assume IELTS is always needed. That is not always true. But if you do need an English test, you must book it early enough to get your results before your visa application is lodged.

Who Needs to Meet AEWV English Requirements?
